If there are no heater hoses going from the water pump directly to the heater core it's safe to bypass the the core completely. Auto-parts stores have an inexpensive plastic step-fitting which allows you to clamp the two different sized heater hoses together. ** If there is a hose going out of the water pump to the heater core on the firewall do not just clamp it off. You must provide a bypass with the same type fitting as above to the second heater hose from the engine.

If you can't afford having it repaired ASAP go to a Carquest auto parts store and buy a 4 or 8 lb. radiator pressure cap. Replace the present one with the new one when the motor is stone cold. Make sure the radiator is filled to the top with plain distilled water for now.

The object of doing this is with the new 4 or 8 pound pressure cap, the cooling system can't build as much pressure and leak through the heater core which is up under your dash on firewall the passengers side.

Double check your warranty. It's 36,000 miles bumper to bumper.

I tend to agree with others above who have said you should have your work done at a Chevrolet dealer. I'm ashamed to say that all heater cores are made outside our borders now. Radiators and heater cores aren't built like they once were here in America at Harrison Radiator in Lockport NY.Please read!!!! im a woman who needs help with my car, needs a mans advice.?
if you go to repair place learn from school of hard knocks... go to to ASE certified mechanic and even consider using dealer.. cheaper to have it done right in the first place adn spend more than to go to place that charges less but takes advantage of ignorance of auto repair.
call three local shops ask how much to replace heater core wil be either a heater core or a bad heater hose sorry but its a pain something cant do at home yourself 200 bucks or more might bypass heater hose for a time but then you wil not have any heat in car but could still drive it that way
Does sound like the heater core, find a reputable independent shop/ shop around not just price, but reputation too. If they treat you badly, or as if your not very smart , go elsewhere. A Good business will walk you thru .
It may be just a loose clamp. have it inspected first. If OK, consult your owner's manual. The vehicle may be still under warranty. If you are unsure, contact your local GM dealer's service department.

something with your air conditioner...

might as well just take it to the mechanic cause its not like if you know how to fix it yourself right?
pour a can of black pepper in the radiator that will take care of your problem
Kelly_f_ is right. This sounds like a heater core going bad. The heater core is responsible for heating your car when you switch the thermostat over towards the ';warm'; side of the spectrum. Bad ones will typically leak engine coolant (often seen as ';water';) into the passenger floorboard, as you describe.

It's easily a $200 job, as others have noted, if not more than that. But it'll probably be worth the cost-- these are very hard to replace at home, and it doesn't sound like you'd be capable of doing so, anyway.

Your Cobalt is only a 2006-- it might still be under warranty, if you're lucky. Call your nearest Chevrolet dealer and ask them if your car is still under its 3-year/36,000 mile warranty (assuming you haven't put more than 36,000 on it by now). If you're out of warranty, go to a private mechanic who you feel you can trust. If it is under warranty, Chevy will probably replace it free of charge if you press them about it.
